Any way Hans who is the most experienced of us all has been giving our little rag tag group some pointers on how to be more efficient and badass. So upon his request and idea for both Stone and I who are dragon born brothers in the game, told us we could come up with our own back story. And we leapt at the chance so here you go. Ladies and Gentlemen I presents to you The back story of Slaten and Wolfy entitled The Brothers Of War.

The brothers of war.

Once there was an egg. But it wasn’t any ordinary egg, it was the hopes of an entire clan, the Tundra Suns. The Tundra Suns served under one of the most evil of blie dragons – Titinus. The clan had been barren for many cycles and hope for their future seemed lost. Until The clan leader Boranus and his queen Cichara were blessed with an egg. The entire clan rejoiced at it’s arrival. When the big day came, no one was more surprised by the hatching that Boranus – for from the single egg came not one, but two new hatchlings.

Slaten was truly everything the clan expected, a perfect strong dragon born. Wolfy almost seemed to the clan like an afterthought, he was so small and fragile. Boranus immediately wanted Wolfy to be cast aside. There was no room for weaklings in the clan. However Cichara would not have of it. She took Wolfy under her wing while slaten went to fulfill the clan’s hopes and desires. Titinus bestowed his blessings upon the newborns and became their god father.

Growing up, Slaten lived in the spotlight. All of the clan’s warriors took part in his training, but he adopted his fathers “Shoot first ask questions later” attitude. He was welcome in every home and often trained with Titinus. He grew stronger in power, but not always in intelligence. He was the youngest dragon born to ever leada hunting party and he often got the warriors into some serious battles. But he was loved even more for his antics. So Slaten became wild. Boranus, fearful for his pride and joy going down an unrighteous path, decided it was time to send both of his offspring to the clan’s warrior school.

Growing up, Wolfy found himself surrounded by the arcane and the lighter side of the clan. Wolfy was totally shunned by his father, yet never let it get him down. He flourished in his mother’s shadow and absorbed every bit of information he could. He would often watch as his brother would take on 5 guards in a sparring session and dream of being a regular dragon born like Slaten. Realizing it was nothing more than a fantasy, Wolfy dedicated himself to his studies. He was often picked on by other young dragon borns and Slaten would always be there to save him. Despite being on opposite sides of their fathers love, the two remained close. And then the day came that Boranus decided it was time for his sons to go to the warrior school. Wolfy knew it was an attempt at his father to force him into being a true dragon born warrior.

The brothers were taken away to the secluded Tundra suns training camp, where all prospective warriors were trained by the most skillfull masters of the clan. Slaten took tot he training with such ease, and Wolfy was falling sadly behind. No matter how he tried, he could not keep up with his brother. One day, the mastes forced the two to fight each other, thinking it would trigger the instinctive warrior that any offspring of Boranus must have. Slaten refused to fight, and was punished. Wolfy dropped out and returned to his mother.

As Slaten took the horrific punishment, he vowed to never tell his father what had happened. As far as Boranus would know, Wolfy was still at the camp. But the punishment drove him over the edge into borderline insanity. His newfound lust for battle made him quite unstable and it took many moons to teach him to somewhat control it.

Wolfy, on the other hand, hiding from his father dove into the darkened side of arcania. His mother guided him and honed his skills, but he was always too unfocused for fear of being caught. He studied everything he could, learning to master his inner fire.

And the day came when Wolfy was discovered in his mother’s protection. In a fury, Boranus summoned Slaten home and all but imprisoned Cichara in her room. The fury that Boranus showed his two sons was nothing short of a hurricane. Wolfy ran from the situation, and Slaten was ordered by his father to break Wolfy of his wimpyness. Or else.

Wolfy and Slaten met atop a cliff. Slaten tried to talk sense into Wolfy, but Wolfy had his mother’s nack for pushing the wrong buttons. Wolfy pushed slaten too far, some saying by using too many large words, and Slaten unleashed his devistating Dragon Breath attack. Started by such a forceful explosion, Wolfy stumbled and fell over the cliff to his death. Startled by his actions, Slaten ran away from the clan.

Over the course of the next year, Slaten became a figure of the underworld, fighting and generally causing more trouble than was expected. He became a wanted fugitive and hopped from city to city, never being in one place for too long. He was hunted by the Black Hand, one of the most dangerous gangs. They finally cornered his and offered him a top ranking position. He took it without asking.

When Wolfy fell to his death, he found himself in a dark place, the grim reaper coming to claim him. He called upon his knowledge of the dark arts and made a deal with the devil. His life for an eternity of servitude. The devil accepted, but only if Wolfy could fight his way from the depths of the underworld. Wolfy went through training by fire and a year later he emerged a cursed soul in debt to the underworld. And he also emerged only to come face to face with his brother.

Slaten was leading a band of rouges on a smash and grab mission in a long forgotten camp when wolfy emerged from a cave. Whereas Slaten was older and batttle torn, wolfy looked exactly as he did before he died. Slaten turned to his team mates excitedly, only to be met with a surprise. Their orders were clear – no witness’. Wolfy would have to be eliminated. Slaten turned on his team, but the fear of his brother getting hurt preoccupied him and he was nearly over taken. It was Wolfy who saved him this time, using his newfound powers to eliminate the competition. Surprised by his brothers skill, the two decided to bury the hatchet. Blood runs thicker than all, and they made up. They camped out and returned to the clan the next day.

They told the clan that they had been adventuring for a year, and that they both had come into their own. Boranus, proud of his battle beaten son, embraced him and brought him before titinus to decide his place in the clan. Wolfy, still not good enough for his father, was embraced by his mother. She was surprised to see him so strong in his magic. She told him that he and his brother were opposites, but they must always work together as they will always need each other. Slaten, the crazed, and Wolfy the wise. It would be Wolfy’s job to watch out for his reckless brother. She bestowed upon him the rank of Warlock.

Titinus bestowed the Warlord rank to Slaten and told him that he and Wolfy must go out in the world and fight for the will of Titinus, and that will would be left to Slaten’s judgement. The clan had a farewell fest in honor of Slaten and Wolfy. The next day they began their quests into the world to earn a name for themselves and their clan.

And man has slaten gotten them into some pickles.

Night of the Long Shadows by Paul Crilley- This is the second book in the stand-alone novel series titled The Inquisitives. It’s also the first book in The Chronicles of Abraxis Wren. The series is set in the Eberron setting of the pen and paper role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. The other novels in The Inquisitives are Bound by Iron by Edward Bolme, Legacy of Wolves by Marsheila Rockwell, and The Darkwood Mask by Jeff LaSala. The second book in The Chronicles of Abraxis Wren is the sequel to Night of the Long Shadows and is called Taint of the Black Brigade. Paul Crilley has written two other novels. His first he co-wrote with Tiffany Trent called Oracle of the Morrigan, which is the sixth book in the Hallowmere series. His other novel is to be released September 2010 and is the first book in the Invisible Order series titled Rise of the Darklings. Night of the Long Shadows was released in May 2007 and was published by Wizards of the Coast, Inc.
A professor at Morgrave University was found slain, with a man with dragon tattoos standing over his corpse. The witness, a dwarf named Torin, is thankfully a partner to an inquisitive named Abraxis Wren, who is called in to investigate the death. After Wren looks over the crime scene, he takes Torin and sets off to find the man with the dragon tattoos. As Wren and Torin uncover more about who this character is, the motives and reasoning doesn’t sit right with the inquisitive. There must be more to this murder than it seems.

Criticisms:
1) Editing. This is the major problem I saw with the story, however, it doesn’t impact the story too much. It was just bothersome. For example, within the first few chapters, we have a paragraph that was repeated. How does something like that happen? It did take me out of the moment and was a little frustrating to have to re-read what I’ve just read. Then later in the story, one of the last chapters to be exact, two names were mixed up. Now I could understand this mistake if the names were similar enough, but the only similarity was they both started with C. Also, I must note that neither Cutter or Col were in the scene together and on top of that, the chapter was focusing on Cutter. There were other, smaller mistakes, but nothing as bad as a paragraph being repeated or a name mix up. It was just sloppy editing.
2) Dialogue Flow. Now this is a very minor issue with the dialogue. There were times when a conversation was happening that I lost track of who was saying what. Now this only happened once, that I can recall, in the story, hence why it’s not a big issue, but it does require mentioning.

Praises:
1) Characters. I really enjoyed the two main characters. Cutter and Wren were just interesting foils to each other. Cutter, the man with the dragon tattoos, was the more ‘normal’ fantasy character. The big tough guy of the story. However, he brought a little heart to the story with his love he shows towards Rowen. However, Abraxis Wren stole the story. To put it simply, I loved his character. Wren was the kind of character that is seen mostly as the comical sidekick character of the main hero. Here, the comedian is the hero. Almost everything Wren did in the story had a sense of humor to it. Sometimes it was a small little action he does or a clever quip he says, but it works in all the right ways. You hardly ever see a main character like that and it was refreshing to see it. The secondary characters were good as well, always filling their needed roles almost perfectly. However, the did little else. Torin was the best of the group, mostly due to the verbal sparing between Wren and him. All in all, the main characters really made this story a blast to read.
2) Humor. The story was funny, plain and simple. From the funny exchanges between Wren and Torin to some of the situations, the story had a humorous feel to it that you normally wouldn’t place with a murder mystery. Instead of hampering the story in silly jokes, it made it easier to read. The interactions between Wren and Torin were funny enough that it seemed like something you’d see between two friends. It also made the more serious scenes, where no jokes were found all the more serious. The humor helped the story flow and not get caught on things that would slow it down.
3) Murder Mystery. The mystery itself was interesting and exciting. Things happened at a rapid pace that it was almost had to put down for too long. It also helped that it wasn’t really predictable, for the most part. With as many twists and turns the story had, it would be hard for anyone to predict what was going to happen in the next chapter. There were times when the story almost felt like something you’d find on a good hour-long crime drama on television. It just was a fun mystery that kept me at the edge of my seat.

Side Notes:
1) Characters. There were a lot of characters that only showed up for one or two scenes and were never heard of again. Usually I’d be upset or angered by this, but for the type of story that Night of the Long Shadows was, it didn’t bother me. In fact, it was almost like something out of a crime TV show like CSI or Law and Order, with all the characters and suspects.
2) Eberron. I’m still really new to the whole setting and there were somethings I weren’t familiar with that I had to look up. Not a huge issue in the scheme of things, but it was something to keep in your mind while reading that you may have to look up things.
3) Cover Art. It’s okay, but ultimately nothing special. The green hue everything has isn’t really flattering and really doesn’t work. Wren and Cutter do look really good, but they don’t save it from the green blandness. They just balance it out to make it an okay cover.

Overall: 4/5
Final Thoughts:
Night of the Long Shadows is a really fun and exciting murder mystery. The biggest issue I had with the novel was the lack of editing. Having a huge mistake like repeating a paragraph again was lazy on the editors’ part. I just hope that other copies of the book have this fixed. It’s also worth mentioning that there were times when it was hard to pick out who was saying what, but it wasn’t a huge issue. Those issues being said, they hardly impact the humorous experience I had while reading it. From the wonderfully witty dialogue to Abraxis Wren’s clever quips and jokes, it was surprising to see how humorous an investigation of a murder can be. While the humor was great, it wouldn’t have been as good without Abraxis Wren. Wren just made this story so much more enjoyable than it already was. His humor and attitude towards things aren’t what you’d normally see in a main character, I say we need more Wren’s in fantasy stories. When all is said and done, would I recommend Night of the Long Shadows? Yes, it’s definitely worth a read.

Featuring: Wild, Wolfy, and Pyro

Well it seems the Ultramarine movie is humming right along however no release date outside of a cryptic “2010″ at the end of the new trailer for the film. Head here to check out the new concept art up, the trailer, voice actors and the second chapter to be revealed, the Imperial Fists!

In other 40K news Relic has upped its profile of the new Space Marine game it is working on. The game was first announced back in 2009 and is finally now yielding pictures and a trailer as well as some game play footage. Relic breathed life back into 40K video games on the PC with their stellar Dawn of War series and now looks to tackle console gaming with this new third person shooter. Think Gears of War but Space Marines don’t need to take cover, they are massive, bio-engineered human warriors of which a squad is the equivalent of an army. They wear armor that can survive nuclear blasts and carry guns that shoot mini, mass reactive rockets. They are the best of the best of the elitest. The story follows Captain Titus of the Ultramarines Chapter(always those damn smurfs) as he battles alongside his squad and Imperial Guard against an Ork horde for control of a forge world. It seems the forge world has a Warlord class titan and the Ork warlord wants it for his personal ride. The game play is split between four space marines, Titus, a devastator marine, a sergeant, and an assault marine. In some of the pics you can see Ork Stormboys assaulting Imperial Valkyries in mid flight.

If Relics track record is any indication of how this game will turn out, it will be true to the source material and look gorgeous. No solid release date on this either except it will be out sometime in the fiscal year of 2012, which runs from April 1 2011 to March 31 2012. I for one cannot wait until this title drops, Relic has done amazing things with the 40K franchise and this looks to be even better.

If you can’t tell by the title, I loved Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

This film has it all, video game nostalgia, kick ass fight scenes, cute girls, great music, and some of the greatest comic add-ins I have ever seen in a movie. This film felt more like you were reading an abridged version of the Scott Pilgrim series by Bryan Lee O’Malley and less like a movie. The excellent casting brought the comic to life and the guest appearances by O’Malley stating that the comic is better than the movie are genius.
If you are unfamiliar with the Scott Pilgrim story he is a 23 year old slacker, bassist for Sex Bob-omb living in Toronto who falls for Ramona Flowers, a delivery girl for Amazon.ca who has a dark secret. Her exs have formed an evil league and only someone who can defeat all seven deadly exs may have the right to date her. This forms the backbone of our story, Scott’s fight for Ramona, and their burgeoning romance. Throw in Wallace his gay roommate, Knives his 17 year old kinda girlfriend, Stephen the singer, Kim his ex and drummer, and you have an amazing, colorful cast of characters. Micheal Cera was fantastic as Scott in his slow transformation from selfish slacker to self-respecting warrior, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead delivers a moody, brooding Ramona. The youthful cast perfectly portray the high school and twenty-something characters wonderfully. If you haven’t read the comic do not let that stop you from enjoying the story and great fight scenes.
At the heart of the story is the League of Evil Exes and some of the best fight scenes I have seen in a while. Each fight is its own boss fight complete with the ever present VS between combatants, special moves, and people exploding into Canadian change. Each Evil Ex has his/her own fighting style so each fight doesn’t bog down into the same old “my crane fist will defeat your X style”, although more than one fight does end with rather ridiculous results, but that is part of the comedy aspect of the film. The actual fight scenes are well choreographed and shot packing a lot of intense beat em up and video game combat in one movie. A lot of the fight scenes have comic styling to them as well as video game effects, this reminds the viewer that Scott Pilgrim was a comic first, then a movie and then a video game.
The music of the Sex Bob-ombs is dirty, overamped indie rock, and I loved it. All the songs sung in the film are done by their actors on screen, so that is Mark Webber, Micheal Cera, and Kim Pill up there singing their angsty little hearts out. Beck wrote all the Sex Bob-Omb songs as Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene wrote the songs for Clash and the Boys at the Battle of the Bands scene. The second Battle of the Bands scene holds one of the films more interesting Ex battles as the Sex Bob-Ombs battle twin techno Djs, the music as well as the special effects are over the top awesome. The soundtrack is very eclectic sporting The Rolling Stones, Metric, Blood Red Shoes and my new favorite song “Threshhold(8-bit)” by Brian LeBarton, that song is uber.
If you are a fan of indie comics, go see SP vs. TW. If you like kick ass action, go see SP vs. TW. If you like movies where the geek gets the girl, go see SP vs. TW. If you love really great music, go see SP vs. TW. If you love fighting games, go see SP vw. TW. If you just want to see a really fun, great movie this year, go see SP vs. TW. I cannot recommend this movie enough to anyone who is into the geek lifestyle, so really people, do yourselves a favor and go see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and support great comic to movie adaptations. Many comic adaptations have fallen flat for me in the past, X-men was a joke, The Punisher has never been done right, and SpiderMan was horrible! Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is firing on all cylinders and shows Hollywood how you adapt a comic the right way.
